Skills for Self Sufficiency

Every person working towards self sufficiency should possess each of these skill or at very minimum have someone in their life that does. Getting out of a dependancy rut means hard work and learning new skills and fine tuning old one's. This is not an exhaustive list but one that we feel if vital to survive and thrive in hard times. These are the skills we possess here at Rocky Oak. If you see the * it means this is a skill we are currently working on.

  • Know the difference in heirloom, hybrid and GMO seeds and which is best suited for your situation
  • Pantry stocking, learn how to rotate your food stock for best results and to not lose food to spoilage
  • How to plant and maintain a garden
  • How to shoot a fire arm(large and small)
  • Learn how to reload ammo
  • How to kill, skin and process animals for food
  • How to build a fire from things you scavage outdoors
  • How to use a chainsaw and all other garden tools(shovel, pick, spade etc.)
  • How to milk a goat/cow
  • How to sterilize the milk(pasturize) We do not pasturize our milk here at Rocky Oak we drink ours raw, but we know how to pasturize
  • Cook from scratch(must know)
  • Know basic medical skills(suturing,first aid etc)
  • How to cook on an open fire from a fire pit
  • How to make soap from lye
  • How to forage/hunt for food
  •  How to sew/mend clothing
  • How to determine a critters age
  • Baisc vehicle maintenence(car, truck, tractor) Things like changing the oil, all fluids, belts, tires etc...
  • Know how to operate a generator(we believe a generator is must have on any self sufficent homestead)
  • Know how to store large amounts of gasoline safely and keep it stable for the generator.
  • Know how to purify water
  • If you are fortunate enough to have a well know how to pump water without the grid or generator...a hand pump is a necessity
  • Know the signs in nature to help determine weather patterns(such as when cow's bunch together it typically means rain) 
  • How to winterize your water pipes
  • Know how to live off grid
  • Know where to secure water in an emergency
  • Know how to raise critters and how to medically treat them
  • Know how to identify illness in humans and critters 
  • Know how to store antibiotics so that they last
  • Know where to purchase antibiotics safely without a prescription
  • Know how to barter if you ever need to
  • Learn to live without a checking account, credit cards or debit cards...YES! It can be done, we do it! Go cash only!
  • Know more than one route from your house to a safe place
  • Have an underground shelter of some kind
  • Know how to raise Bees
  • Know how to safely can, freeze or salt cure food/meat to keep it from spoiling
  • Own at least one canner
  • Know how to dehydrate food and store it safely
  • Know how to build a fence
  • Know about security and how to keep yourself safe
  • Know how to humanely kill and process an animal
  • Know about medications like antibiotics and know what each one treats.
